Landfills are the predominant storage facility for municipal solid waste, worldwide. Landfills, both closed and active, pose potential threats to surface and groundwater quality and to human health. Solid waste landfills and hazardous waste landfills both emit toxic gases into the surrounding air if not captured.

Landfill gas is roughly 50% methane. The remainder of landfill gas is mostly carbon dioxide with varying amounts of nitrogen, oxygen and assorted contaminants known as "non-methane organic compounds" or NMOCs.

Landfill gas energy recovery offers significant environmental, economic, and energy benefits.

An average landfill with one million tons of waste in place can produce an estimated minimum of 6 million m³ of landfill gas per year, or about 16,438 m³ per day. Using this amount of landfill gas with conventional technology will result in the generation of approximately 1.065 MW, however using Agni's technology it would be possible to generate 1.522 MW, i.e. 15% more power. Translating this into monetary terms, assuming a unit price of US$0.06 per unit or kWh, results in the increase in revenue of US$240,000 per annum.

In addition to providing increased revenue by up to 15% per annum, Agni's Integrated Hydrogen Power Plant Technology may also be simultaneously configured to provide the benefits of Cogeneration i.e. to produce electricity and thermal energy (i.e., steam, hot water) from one fuel source.

Cogeneration systems can achieve substantially higher efficiencies by using the "waste" heat that is a by-product of most power generation cycles. Thermal energy cogenerated by landfill gas projects can be used on-site for heating, cooling, and/or process needs, or piped to a nearby industrial or commercial user to provide a second revenue stream to the project.

Agni's Hydrogen Power Plants, and its patented Gas Enhancement Technology for Landfill Gas and Sewer Gas can produce full rated power down to 15% Methane (CH4) content.
